Mr. R Gopalan is a knowledgeable and accomplished individual who has contributed significantly to the development of the financial sector in India. He is an experienced individual who has held several notable positions throughout his career. He currently serves as a member of the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), which falls under the control of the Prime Minister. Prior to his role at PESB, Mr. Gopalan served as the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India until his retirement in July 2012. During his tenure, he effectively represented India in various international forums, including G-20 meetings, ADB, World Bank, and IMF meetings. He brought about numerous changes to the functioning of the capital markets and introduced new policy measures in infrastructure. Before serving as the Secretary of the Department of Economic Affairs, Mr. Gopalan held the role of the Secretary of the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, where he oversaw banking, insurance, and pension reforms. In this role, he supported Public Sector Banks (PSBs), Insurance Companies, and Development Financial Institutions (DFIs) through policy guidelines, legislative and other administrative changes, monitored their performance, and formulated policies for NBFCs, private banks, and foreign banks. He also coordinated between the industry, banks, and financial institutions, and participated actively in various Ministerial Meetings of WTO for Trade Negotiations. Mr. Gopalan holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from Boston University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration and Management from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
